A doctor has identified seven unusual symptoms of menopause, from a feeling like insects are crawling under the skin to “electric shocks.”
A GP has said that on average women have 10 different symptoms of menopause.
One in five women during menopause feels the sensation of insects crawling on or under the skin.
“The strangest thing is that it is simply a ‘tactile hallucination,’ meaning a person experiences a physical sensation without any physical cause,” says the gynecologist.
This symptom can cause “mild to severe itching,” which many people will find irritating. Burning tongue pain can occur “due to the activation of pain nerve cells surrounding the taste buds of the tongue.”
This may be caused by falling estrogen levels, which can lead to a metallic taste in the mouth, along with dryness, tingling, and potential soreness.
Another possible symptom of menopause is a change in spatial perception.
“More than two in 10 women experience changes in spatial perception during menopause, most commonly changes in depth perception,” the doctor added. This can lead to clumsiness, especially when combined with the dry eyes and decreased concentration that women often experience during menopause.
The consistency, volume, and odor of vaginal discharge may also change.
“The change in vaginal mucus due to decreased estrogen levels can alter the balance of friendly microbes in this area. It also increases the likelihood of vaginal infections, such as thrush, which can cause an unpleasant odor.”
