Toward the end of the 12 days, ambulances and police cars lined the streets near his home, where the boy “struggled” and friends watched him.

The previous record for no sleep was set by a man named Randy Gardner, who went 11 days without sleep when he was 17 in 1964. Randy reportedly experienced hallucinations and extreme confusion during the attempt, while scientists documented his every move.

Since Randy broke the record, there have been two other people who have gone more than 400 hours awake, MacDonald and Maureen Weston, but the Guinness Book of Records does not recognize this attempt.

All previous attempts to break the record were accompanied by observation by medical professionals. Norme hasn't been sleeping, leading to fears for his condition.

After just 24 hours without sleep, people's coordination and memory deteriorate. Increase that to 36 hours and your physical health begins to deteriorate, with a racing heart and increased blood pressure forcing your body to keep you fit.

According to health expert Dr. Drerup, after two days deprived of sleep, the body begins to “shut down”. Your eyes don't close, and you may be aware of what's going on, but your brain essentially shuts down for a “microsleep”—up to 15 seconds of rest—while your body tries to compensate.

If you stay awake for more than three days, people may develop psychosis. It is currently unknown how Norme felt when he broke the record, except for the immense joy he and his friends felt when they passed Randy.

Remember, the man grew the heaviest eggplant in the world. It is nine times heavier than a soccer ball.
