A chocolate drink helps protect against deadly heart disease

The ingredients in hot chocolate have a positive effect on the functions heart.

A heart attack (myocardial infarction) occurs when part of the heart muscle does not receive enough blood. The longer it takes without treatment to restore blood flow, the more the heart is affected, which increases the risk of death.

The main cause of a heart attack is coronary heart disease (CHD). A chocolate drink, if you drink it in moderate quantities, helps to protect against the occurrence of potentially life-threatening heart disease.

The fact that the consumption of hot chocolate provides prevention of a heart attack, scientists from the University of Düsseldorf have stated. Their test subjects, people aged between 35 and 60, drank a drink containing cocoa components (flavonols) during the tests, and a placebo drink.

As a result, it was concluded that people who drank a drink with flavanols had lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol and less stiffness of the arteries than other participants.

The researchers stated that “substances, contained in cocoa, hot chocolate, help adults maintain their heart and blood circulation in good working order”.

In their opinion, regular consumption of such a drink reduces the risk of coronary heart disease and a potentially fatal heart attack.

Scientists also note that in people who drink a drink rich in cocoa-flavanols, blood vessels better tolerate the tension caused by mental stress. They assume that cocoa has a positive effect on the membrane layer of cells – the endothelium, which lines the cavities of the heart and blood vessels. Experts explain that when the endothelium is in optimal condition, it reduces the risk of peripheral vascular disease, stroke, heart disease, diabetes, kidney failure, thrombosis, as well as severe viral infectious diseases.
