Researchers have studied the potential of different types of activity for longevity, and its latest results show that a combination of sports may lead to the most favorable results.
There is a lot of evidence that exercise extends life, and some studies suggest that it can increase life expectancy by several years. It has been shown to be particularly important in protecting the aging population from falls, improving cognitive skills and preventing heart disease.
New evidence suggests that engaging in some leisure-time exercise per week may be the key to reducing death rates among the elderly. Adults who participate in a variety of leisure activities each week have a lower risk of dying from any cause. Such activities can include walking, jogging, swimming or playing tennis.
Research sheds light on the importance of engaging in activities that are maintainable. Achieving the recommended amount of physical activity per week through any combination of physical activity per week reduces the risk of any cause by 13 percent compared with no participation in these activities.
Evaluating the effects of each individual sport, scientists found that racket sports reduced the risk by 16% and running by 15%. Similar results were obtained for all investigated types of activity.
