In fact, about two out of every three people mumble or talk in their sleep, a British somnologist has said.
The doctor explained in an interview why people might talk in their sleep, and whether such conversations are a symptom of something pathological or dangerous.
“Sleep talking is actually a common phenomenon that is not usually considered a medical problem,” the doctor told The Sun:
The doctor noted that the tendency to talk in your sleep is known as somniloquy is a type of parasomnia or abnormal sleep activity. Conversations can occur during both REM and non-REM sleep, and range from barely audible and brief mumbling to full-blown “oratorical” discussions. Usually, such talking is harmless, but sometimes it can indicate a serious sleep disorder or health problem.
What can trigger sleep talking? According to the somnologist, it can be stress, lack of sleep, alcohol consumption, an unfavorable sleep environment, such as an inappropriate temperature or too much light entering the room.
“Mental health can also affect sleep talking. It is known that people suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are prone to it,” the doctor added.
When to seek help. The specialist gave advice: if sleep talking begins suddenly in adulthood or is accompanied by significant anxiety, screaming, night terrors, or enuresis, this should be discussed with a doctor.
