Modern travelers are increasingly looking for unusual routes and unique experiences. One such adventurer is popular YouTuber Ben Morris, who traveled to the small mining town of Coober Pedy, located in the Australian outback. The blogger described his journey in one of his YouTube videos.
The city is famous for the fact that most of its residents live underground.
Instead of exploring bustling metropolises like Sydney or Melbourne, Ben chose Coober Pedy, a town with a population of just 1,437. His interest was piqued by an article about the “7 Most Unusual Cities in the World,” in which the town took pride of place.
The blogger managed not only to study the life of local residents, but also to live in an underground apartment, which he rented through Airbnb. And although the very concept of “living underground” evokes associations with cramped and dark caves, the dwelling turned out to be equipped with all modern conveniences, including electricity, water supply and even a stylish interior.
The main reason why the inhabitants of Kuber – Pedi prefer an underground lifestyle, associated with a harsh climate. In summer, the air temperature can rise to 50°C. However, underground maintains a comfortable temperature throughout the year, which allows you to save on air conditioning.
“It’s an amazing feeling to be comfortably cool without spending a fortune,” Ben tells his viewers.
Coober Pedy is also known as the opal capital of the world. Ben managed to take a look inside one of the mines, where he learned about fascinating and sometimes creepy local legends. One of them tells of a miner who found a mysterious cross underground. This incident scared him so much that he decided to bury the relic without ever finding out its origin.
In addition, Ben observed an amazing phenomenon – scorpions glowing in the dark under the light of an ultraviolet flashlight, which added even more mystery to his journey.
