Brain aging can lead to a dangerous disease. Dementia entails memory loss, dementia, and decreased cognitive function. It is believed that hereditary factors and lifestyle influence the likelihood of this disease.
Spanish doctors have discovered a new method of preventing dementia. The research was conducted by specialists from the Open University of Catalonia in Barcelona.
Residents of this Spanish city use two languages in everyday life – Catalan and Spanish. Scientists examined 135 patients with mild cognitive impairment, 68 patients with Alzheimer's disease and 63 healthy residents of Barcelona. Among other things, they measured how actively the study participants used both local languages in their daily lives. The results showed that in those patients who spoke both Spanish and Catalan in their daily lives, cognitive impairment appeared at a later age than in those who mainly used one language for communication.
“Active bilingualism is an important factor in delaying the onset of symptoms of mild cognitive impairment – the preclinical phase of Alzheimer's disease, because it contributes to the formation of cognitive reserve,” explained Marco Calabaria, professor at the University's Faculty of Medicine. Scientists are going to find out whether bilingualism helps in the prevention of Parkinson's and Huntington's diseases.
