Position on the side is the most common position of people in sleep, but a neurologist and rehabilitation doctor warns: resting at night with the body on the side can be dangerous for the back.
On Instagram, the neurologist said that people who have a habit fall asleep in a position on the side, risk facing pain in the lower back, if they do not stir a pillow between the legs. Its use, according to the expert, helps align the position of the pelvis and spine.
If you sleep in a side position without an additional pillow, you can provoke overstretching of the middle gluteal muscle. This muscle stabilizes the pelvis and is one of the most important in the process of walking, the doctor explains.
Stretching of the gluteus medius muscle due to incorrect body position reduces its activity during movement, unnecessarily weakens it. As a result, the load on the muscles of the lower back increases, which is dangerous for pain in this part of the back, the neurologist warns.
