A neurologist named the foods that make you stupid and sad

A new study has shown that refined carbohydrates negatively affect cognitive function – in fact, they make people stupid.

A group of researchers studied the relationship between refined carbohydrate consumption and cognitive abilities in a group of 95 healthy young people aged 20 to 30. Of the 95 participants, 48 were women and 47 were men.

Consuming foods made from refined carbohydrates has been found to have a negative effect on cognitive function in both sexes. Eating foods that often have a high glycemic index has been linked to reduced brain function.

Since the second half of the 20th century, the Western world has undergone a massive dietary change, with a dramatic increase in the consumption of refined carbohydrates leading to numerous deleterious effects for health Industrialized food products were developed with the appearance of refined products with a high degree of processing.

Whole carbohydrates are unprocessed and contain fiber that is naturally found in food. Refined carbohydrates, on the other hand, are considered “empty” calories because the processing process strips them of almost all of their fiber, vitamins, and minerals.

Examples of refined carbohydrates include breakfast cereals, pasta, pastries, pizza dough, sugary desserts, white bread, and more.

Refined carbohydrates also cause depression

Refined carbohydrates affect not only cognitive function but also mental health.

The team of scientists carefully examined data from more than 70,000 postmenopausal women.

The data included depression levels, the type of carbohydrates consumed, and the GI of the foods consumed by the participants. In the study, they noted that eating carbohydrates raises blood sugar levels to varying degrees depending on the type of food. The more refined the carbohydrate, the higher its score on the GI scale, which ranges from zero to 100.

The researchers found that progressively higher GI scores, resulting from consumption of added sugar and refined grains, were associated with an increased risk of new depression in postmenopausal women.

Refined foods such as white bread, white rice, and sodas trigger a hormonal response in the body that lowers blood sugar levels. This response can also cause or exacerbate mood swings, fatigue, and other symptoms of depression.

Moderate obesity caused by a diet high in refined carbohydrates may contribute to the development of anxiety and depressive-like behavior after stress.
