A normal level of iron in the blood will help you live longer
According to the research, a normal level of iron in the blood can be one of the significant factors of longevity.
Scientists from the University of Edinburgh and the Institute of Biology of Aging named after Max Planck Institute in Germany decided to contribute to the study of biological aging. They focused on three main aspects – longevity, active life and overall life expectancy.
No one is immune from biological aging and it is unlikely that this is even possible for such a complex system as the human body. Aging makes a person more susceptible to environmental factors and leads to the gradual fading of all functions. In addition, the risks of various diseases are increasing.
Experts have identified ten regions of the genome associated with life span, health and longevity. Upon detailed study, it became clear that genes related to iron metabolism play an important role.
There is one important detail – both low and too high levels of iron in the blood reduce life expectancy, and that it is important, the period of active life, when a person does not have age-related and other serious diseases. Therefore, it is important to maintain the level of iron at a normal level.
The level of iron in the blood is connected, first of all, with nutrition. According to the authors of the work, their findings can explain, for example, why excessive consumption of red meat is associated with age-related diseases. In the future, it will be possible to create drugs that regulate iron metabolism in order to prolong life.
