A new study that examines the effects of repeated sleep loss during of a simulated work week, showed that drinking caffeinated coffee during the day helps to minimize the decline in attention and cognitive function compared to decaffeinated coffee.
Although this effect was observed in the first three to four days of limited sleep, by on the first and last day, no difference was observed between decaffeinated and decaffeinated coffee users. Therefore, this suggests that the beneficial effects of coffee on sleep-deprived people are temporary.
Denise Lange, a co-author of the study, notes that previous research has shown that drinking caffeinated coffee can reduce the effects of sleep deprivation. on attention deficits and cognitive function in the short term.
“Our study shows that moderate coffee consumption can mitigate some of the effects of sleep deprivation for a few days, but it does not replace a good night's sleep in the long term,” – emphasizes Lange.
