A popular inexpensive seasoning increases the body's defense against cancer
Although there is no certain way to prevent cancer, certain lifestyle decisions can increase the body's defense against the formation of tumors. One of them is the inclusion of an inexpensive popular seasoning in the diet, experts from Cancer Research UK (Great Britain) told about it.
“Certain foods, as research shows, are particularly beneficial in cancer prevention. Horseradish, a spicy vegetable that forms the basis of many popular seasonings, is undoubtedly among them. It is distinguished by the presence of plant compounds that increase the body's defense against malignant cell changes,” experts said.
Oncologists refer to the data that the substances of the spicy product – glucosinolates and isothiocyanates – have the property of stimulating the process of apoptosis (death) of cancer cells, suppressing their growth. Horseradish also contains sinigrin, which acts as an antioxidant in the body, preventing cell damage caused by free radicals, which in many cases is the trigger for tumor inflammation.
“Test-tube studies suggest that the compounds horseradish can prevent the growth of malignant cells of the colon, lungs, and stomach. The peroxidase enzyme found in it acts as a powerful anti-cancer compound on pancreatic cancer cells,” Cancer Research UK representatives state.
In general, they say, the combination of a healthy diet and physical activity is associated with a reduction in overall risk cancer, as well as with a lower risk of breast, prostate, colon and rectal cancer. The principles of such a diet include
- high consumption of plant foods and whole grains,
- low consumption of sugary drinks,
- moderate amount of red meat,

- control of the amount of alcoholic beverages,
- low consumption of salt,
- minimum consumption of canned food, industrially processed products, especially meat, flour.
