The study, published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, involved 30 people, all of whom had previously been diagnosed with diabetes.
The researchers wanted to compare the effects of a moderate-fat diet, where 20% of daily energy intake came from pistachios, and a low-fat control diet, on blood pressure.
The participants were divided into two groups. The first group followed a control diet, which included low-fat, high-carbohydrate snacks.
Those in the second group followed a moderate-fat diet, which also included pistachios.
The participants followed this diet for four weeks, and then underwent a series of studies: they measured blood pressure, heart rate variability, and other markers of cardiovascular disease.
“The diet, which included pistachios, significantly reduced total peripheral vascular resistance, increased cardiac output, and improved heart rate variability,” the researchers note.
Systolic ambulatory blood pressure decreased significantly […] in those who followed the pistachio diet, with the reduction being particularly pronounced during sleep.”
“A moderate-fat diet that includes pistachios modestly improves cardiovascular risk factors in adults with type 2 diabetes,” the study authors concluded.
Previous studies have found that pistachios contain monounsaturated fatty acids and high amounts of polystyrene, the benefits of which for hypertensive patients are well known.
The authors of one review paper, which examined data from 21 studies, noted that pistachios reduced the upper number of blood pressure by 1.82 mm Hg and the lower number by 0.8 mm Hg.
The lower number, diastolic pressure, shows the pressure in the arteries when the heart is resting between beats.
The upper number, systolic pressure, is the pressure on the walls of the arteries when the heart contracts.
According to Blood Pressure UK, since the latter number gives more information about the pressure on the heart, it also says more about the risk of stroke and heart attack.
In addition, pistachios contain the amino acid L-arginine, which is converted into nitric oxide in the body. This substance plays an important role in vasodilation.
By improving blood circulation, pistachios can affect a number of physical functions, such as erectile dysfunction.
In other studies, the same nutritional qualities have been shown to lower cholesterol levels.
This property is also associated with the content of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats in pistachios, which reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
