A psychologist explained why we often wake up at 3 o'clock in the morning

Many of us tend to wake up at night. And most often, according to experts, awakening occurs around 3 o'clock in the morning. It is during this period of time that many people suddenly wake up, and this process is often accompanied by a feeling of anxiety for no reason and the appearance of obsessive thoughts.

As explained by Professor Greg Murray from the Center for Mental Health at Swinburne University of Technology, all these feelings related to our physiology.

According to him, it is until 3-4 o'clock in the morning that a person's sleep reaches its zenith. At this moment, the body temperature rises, as well as the level of the stress hormone, which, in combination with the gradual decrease in the urge to sleep, leads to awakening.

“Add to this the lack of other resources such as social connections. We remain face to face with our thoughts. The mind comes to the conclusion that the problems in our life are unsolvable,” says Murray.

Stuffiness and dry air in the bedroom can also cause you to wake up with a feeling of terror, as if something is suffocating you.

Therefore, if possible, sleep with the window open and be sure to ventilate the room before going to bed. Before going to bed, drink a cup of tea with mint, chamomile or St. John's wort. You can add a spoonful of honey. The mattress and pillow should be comfortable, and the blanket should be light.

If sleep disturbances last for a long time, consult a doctor.
