A rash near the mouth may signal advanced fatty liver disease

A rash around the mouth can be a sign that a person has low zinc levels due to liver dysfunction.

A liver that has been exposed to obesity for a long time prevents the absorption of certain nutrients, including zinc. Thus, many people with fatty liver disease also have a zinc deficiency. According to the journal Metabolism Open, people with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and liver fibrosis have significantly reduced serum zinc concentrations, Express reports.

Zinc is a mineral that contributes to the normal functioning of the immune system. It is known to modulate antiviral and antibacterial immunity and regular inflammatory response. One of the external manifestations of its deficiency is dermatitis. In cases of liver damage (especially in cases of advanced obesity), dermatitis can appear as a rash in the area around the mouth. This rash often looks like small, red pimples or miniature, fluid-filled blisters that may feel hard to the touch.

In addition, Metabolism Open reports that liver damage can also cause other symptoms on the face – swelling, itching and rosacea.

What else can cause zinc deficiency? In addition to liver problems, the cause of its deficiency in the body can be diabetes, obesity, hypertension, reduced absorption from the gastrointestinal tract, and inadequate nutrition.
