One of the easiest ways walking can improve health indicators, and it also helps to increase life expectancy.
Regular walking can increase life expectancy by up to 15 years, writes the journal Communication Biology, which published the relevant conclusions of a new study. The health benefits of daily walking have been investigated by scientists from the University of Leicester led by Professor Thomas Yates. They found that people who walk briskly every day can be 15 years younger than those who rarely walk.
In particular, the researchers concluded that brisk walking helps preserve the length of telomeres, protective structures at the ends of chromosomes. Their reduction occurs in all people with age, it is associated with degenerative processes in the body, shortening of life. The scientists' conclusions about the effect of walking on the state of chromosomes are based on the results of studying the length of telomeres in 405,981 middle-aged people.
In turn, the Lancet Public Health magazine published data from a meta-analysis of 15 studies involving almost 50,000 people, which show: an increase number of steps taken per day reduces the risk of premature death. Researchers estimate that for people age 60 and older, this risk decreases when they take about 6,000 to 8,000 steps a day. For people younger than 60, the similar risk is reduced by taking 8,000-10,000 steps a day.
Experts state that walking provides prevention of age-related memory loss, and is also great for postmenopausal women, maintaining strength bones and muscles. According to them, in general, adults should aim to take at least 6,000 steps each day.
