Vitamin B12 is an important nutrient that supports the normal functioning of all body systems. The most well-known symptoms of its deficiency include fatigue, bad mood, and nervous disorders. However, there are several early signs on the hands that many people often miss.
As doctors explained, B12 plays an important role in the production of red blood cells and maintaining nerve health. Complications that can arise from these two conditions include loss of coordination and cardiovascular disease.
The most common first symptom of a vitamin deficiency is tingling in the hands or feet, which appears against the background of nerve damage. The fact is that in the nervous system, B12 helps produce a substance called myelin.
“Myelin is a protective coating that envelops nerves and helps them transmit impulses. People with vitamin B12 deficiency may not have enough myelin, without which nerves can be damaged. Problems more often occur in the extremities, whose nerves are called peripheral,” doctors explained.
Sometimes tingling can manifest as a sharp stabbing pain in the palm of one or both hands. The condition usually occurs suddenly and without any apparent cause—most often under the ring finger.
If B12 deficiency is left untreated, the tingling will begin to “rise” along the outer edge of the hand, starting at the wrist. The pain occurs when the wrist is bent backward.
To prevent vitamin deficiency, it is important to regularly consume certain foods. These include red meat, poultry, eggs, dairy products, and fish.
