Scientists have come to the conclusion that grapes have a positive effect not only on the microbiome, but also on the level of cholesterol and bile acids. Many useful properties of grapes are due to their high content of fiber and antioxidants – catechins. Catechins are known to help fight inflammation in the body. Now researchers have found that they also promote the development of beneficial bacteria in the gut and can balance the intestinal flora.
In the new study, participants consumed 46 g of grape powder per day, which is equal to about two servings of whole grapes. After four weeks, they not only saw a 5.9% decrease in LDL cholesterol (“bad” cholesterol), but also a significant increase in the gut microbiome diversity index. In addition, a decrease in the amount of bile acids in the blood by 40.9% was recorded.
