A woman didn't buy food for four years and saved a lot of money: how she did it

Sophie Jewell-Anderson is using the thousands of pounds she saved to travel the world.

Sophie Jewell-Anderson, a 30-year-old restaurant manager who lives in Denmark, said that for four years, instead of going to the store to buy food, she looked for it in garbage containers near supermarkets.

Now she only buys items in supermarkets household items such as toilet paper, dishwashing liquid and toothpaste, which cost her just £80 in 2024, writes the Daily Star.

Now she uses the thousands of pounds she has saved to travel the world. “I don’t really need to go anywhere because I find all my food in garbage cans,” says the Dane.

Sophie has never had a hard time buying groceries, but she realized that searching for food in the dumpsters would be more economical. “There was a lot of food, some of it was expired, but a lot of it was still fresh – that’s how it all started. For me, it was like a treasure hunt. I quickly realized that there was a lot of good food in the dumpsters, and I didn’t have to go to the store anymore,” she explained.

The woman says she doesn’t have a set schedule for searching for food in the dumpsters and goes there several times a week or once every two weeks: “I find so much, so my fridge is always full.”

Sophie said that the money she saved by not having to go grocery shopping has given her more freedom – she can work less and travel around the world.

In recent years, she has visited Kenya, Argentina, Italy, Spain and Dubai. Sophie said: “It gives me freedom. I travel a lot and spend money on trips and meetings with friends all over the world. I only work three days a week. The money I save from finding food in dumpsters allows me to spend more on the things I love.”

Sophie became so passionate about dumpster diving that she got her whole family involved – including her parents, siblings, cousins ​​and grandparents. She cooks meals for them from the food she finds, and they now do it together during their holidays.

Sophie added: “All my friends and family know that I find food in dumpsters. When they come over, they know that my food is from the dumpsters. They are confident in the quality of this food because I will never offer guests something that I would not eat myself. I carefully evaluate all the products before choosing them. When we go on family vacations, the whole family looks for food in garbage cans.”
