A 10-year study made it possible to establish links between alcohol abuse and poor sleep quality. Alcohol is known for its ability to negatively affect many aspects of a person's life and mental health.
Although alcohol is destructive, some people use it to help them fall asleep faster. And now researchers from Finland have completed observations that lasted more than three decades.
They showed that light and heavy alcohol abuse disrupts the quality of a person's sleep, due to which he becomes more vulnerable to physiological and psychological disorders. This study examined the role of alcohol in reducing sleep quality and developing insomnia.
Importantly, the study involved nearly 14,000 identical twins born between 1945 and 1957. They were observed for a long time. The participants of this experiment evaluated the quality of sleep according to a certain scale.
To study the relationship between sleep and alcohol, the monthly consumption of alcoholic beverages was determined, when the volunteers were divided into heavy drinkers, moderate drinkers, light drinkers sober people also use it. Heavy drinkers consumed more than 7 servings of alcohol per week for women and more than 14 for men.
The results of the study clearly showed that increased levels of alcohol are associated with decreased sleep. Moderate and heavy alcohol abuse preceded sleep problems in the long term. So, alcohol is not a hypnotic at all, but rather has the opposite effect.
