Carcinogens have been found in the active ingredients of hypertension drugs – valsartan, losartan and irbesartan.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a recall of drugs belonging to the group of angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs).
N-nitrosodimethylamine impurities were identified in these active pharmaceutical ingredients (NDMA), which causes cancer.
According to the FDA, the active ingredients contaminated with the carcinogen were purchased in India, China, and the USA from pharmaceutical companies Hetero Labs Limited, Zhejiang Huahai Pharmaceuticals, and Mylan Pharmaceuticals.
Ukrainian companies have something to offer, each of the three drugs has a large number of analogues: valsartan – about 70, losartan – 60, irbesartan – 20. Our pharmaceutical market is formed in accordance with the demand of patients, and, as is known, cardiovascular diseases do not give up their leading positions and remain the main cause of death worldwide.
In America, medicines with confirmed elevated levels of NDMA were recalled, as they pose a real threat to the health of patients.
For reference, the safe daily dose of NDMA for humans should not exceed 0.096 micrograms if taken orally for a long time. With high blood pressure, such drugs are prescribed for life and are a time bomb.
