An ophthalmologist named the worst products that spoil vision

Your diet plays an important role in the health of your heart and blood vessels, which can then affect the health of your eyes. Optometrist Whitney Seltman confirmed that one of the “worst foods” for eye health is bread and pasta.

Simple carbohydrates in white bread and pasta are associated with a higher risk of age-related macular degeneration.

The reason is that simple carbohydrates raise blood sugar levels, which can lead to blood vessel damage over time.

Age-related macular degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration affects people between the ages of 50 and 60. Affecting the middle part of your vision, it can make it difficult to read and recognize faces.

The condition can affect one or both eyes, which may appear as:

  • Perceiving straight lines as wavy or crooked
  • Objects appear smaller than usual
  • Colors seem less vivid than before
  • Seeing things that are not there (hallucinations)

Seltman suggests replacing white bread and pasta with whole-grain varieties to prevent blood sugar spikes.

Processed meats are also bad for eye health because they're high in sodium.

An eye doctor has confirmed that too much sodium can lead to high blood pressure, which can lead to hypertensive retinopathy – damaged blood vessels causing blurred vision or loss of vision.

High blood pressure can also lead to choroidopathy, which is a build-up of fluid under the retina.

Too much processed meat can also lead to neuropathy, as the blockage of blood flow kills nerve cells, leading to vision loss.

Fried foods made with trans fats can increase cholesterol level. Again, too much cholesterol can cause problems with blood vessels.
