Eyes require such the same attention as any other body. According to scientists, the number of people with visual impairments is increasing worldwide due to the aging population. In addition to the fact that taking care of the health of the eyes helps to protect them in the future from various diseases, the quality of vision also affects life expectancy.
In a meta-analysis published this year in the journal Lancet Global Health, scientists analyzed the data about the health of 48,000 people. They found that the risk of death was 29% higher in people with mild visual impairment compared to people with normal vision. However, the risk increased to 89% in those who suffered from severe vision problems.
“As the population continues to age, the prevalence of vision impairment and blindness is projected to more than double over the next 30 years. The consequences of eye disease are numerous, including an increased risk of falls, cognitive impairment, and dementia,” the researchers added.
According to specialists from the Envision EyeCare clinic (USA), there are certain products that can protect eye health. All of them contain a large amount of antioxidants and vitamins. The list includes fatty fish rich in omega-3 acids (sardines, salmon, mackerel, tuna), leafy greens, eggs, citrus fruits, berries and nuts, legumes, seeds and whole grain products.
