Antihistamines, which are actively used in allergies that can almost nullify the result of sports training: indicators do not grow, muscles do not increase. This was proven by studies conducted by scientists from two European universities – Ghent and the University of Copenhagen.
The authors of these works studied the effects of two types of antihistamine drugs – H1-blockers, used to fight allergies, and H2-blockers, which used for stomach problems.
Effect of histamine
Histamine is produced in the body and is used there, including, to regulate blood flow in the muscles. Increased blood supply during training accelerates recovery and allows muscle mass to grow. The researchers checked what would happen if you blocked the production of histamine during physical activity with drugs.
Experimental results
Scientists conducted two experiments. In both cases, subjects pedaled on exercise bikes, being divided into groups: some did not take antihistamines, others took them at different times in relation to training. The results showed that histamine blockers reduce blood flow to muscles during exercise. Accordingly, it affected the results of physical exercises and muscle condition. And the first and second almost did not grow.
