There are more than 100 types of arthritis and related conditions. There is no cure for arthritis, but there are many treatments that can help slow it down. Certain foods can help or cause arthritis problems. Fran McElwain, a practicing therapist, says the trick is to avoid foods that cause inflammation. “Ultra-processed foods” contain a cocktail of other ingredients that can be extremely inflammatory for many.” These foods include sugar, gluten, dairy, soy, seed oils, artificial sweeteners, food preservatives, colorings, and other additives. Fran notes, “If I were to advise my clients to avoid one thing, it would be sugar and all highly processed carbohydrates.” She suggests that “these foods cause huge spikes in blood sugar, which sets off a cascade” of reactions that lead to a number of inflammatory diseases, including arthritis. “Food is medicine. If you’re struggling with arthritis pain, eating foods that have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and pain-relieving properties can help, along with any medications or other treatments your doctor recommends.”
Arthritis sufferers should eat a healthy, balanced diet and maintain a healthy weight. He explains that a diet should consist of a variety of foods from all five food groups. These include fruits and vegetables, starchy foods, and meat, fish, eggs, and beans.
