Arthritis pain: what healthy foods can trigger an exacerbation

Arthritis is a general term for a number of conditions in which joints are damaged. For example, inflammation can occur with gout. This disease is characterized by the fact that due to the high level of uric acid in the blood, crystals form around the joint, which leads to its slow destruction. The process is accompanied by severe pain.

The main reason for the high content of urea is the improper functioning of the kidneys. However, the wrong lifestyle can also lead to this. In particular, constant consumption of food rich in purines. This element, the doctors of the Mayo Clinic note, is contained in our body, but it can also be found in a number of products. Despite the fact that purine can be useful, it is, on the contrary, contraindicated for gout patients. Foods rich in this element include:

  • red meat, game and offal;
  • processed foods and drinks;
  • food with a high yeast content extracts;
  • eggs;
  • fish and seafood.

The latter, despite purines, may still be useful for those suffering from gout The fact is that they contain omega-3 fatty acids, which can reduce inflammation. However, doctors advise to eat them in moderate quantities.

How to relieve symptoms

Because gout is considered a “lifestyle disease”, a proper diet will help reduce the level of inflammation-provoking uric acid. “There is some evidence that eating cherries reduces the risk of gout attacks,” the doctors note, stressing that you should not give up medicines. Coffee and foods rich in vitamin C are also good for gout sufferers.

Symptoms

According to British doctors, when a number of symptoms are detected it is necessary to immediately consult a doctor so that he prescribes timely treatment. Signs of the development of gout include:

  • sudden pain in the joints (mainly in the big toe, less often in the joints of the feet, hands, wrists, elbows or knees);
  • high temperature and redness in the joint area.

In case of increased pain, heat and severe weakness, doctors advise to call for emergency medical help.
