There are more than 100 types of arthritis and related conditions. There is no cure for arthritis, but there are many treatments that can help slow it down. Certain foods can help or cause problems with arthritis.
Fran McElwain, a practicing therapist, says the trick is to avoid foods that cause inflammation.
“Ultra-processed products” contain a cocktail of other ingredients that can be extremely inflammatory to many.”
These products include sugar, gluten, dairy, soy, seed oils, artificial sweeteners, food preservatives, colors and other additives.
Fran notes:
“If there was one thing I would advise my clients to avoid, it would be sugar and all highly processed carbohydrates.”
She suggests that “these foods cause huge spikes in blood sugar that trigger a cascade” of reactions that lead to a number of inflammatory diseases, including arthritis.
“Food is medicine. If you are struggling with arthritis pain, eating foods that have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and pain-relieving properties can help, as well as any medications or other treatments your doctor recommends.”
Suffering from arthritis, follow a healthy and balanced diet and maintain a healthy weight. He explains that the diet should consist of a variety of foods from all five food groups. These are fruits and vegetables, starchy foods, as well as meat, fish, eggs and beans.
