Food dyes Red 40, Yellow 5 and Yellow 6 may contain contaminants known to cause cancer. Benzidine, 4-aminobiphenyl, and 4-aminoazobenzene are potential carcinogens found in food dyes.
Soft drinks
A study published in John Hopkins looked at caramel color in soft drinks and its effect on 4-methylimidazole cancer risk.
“Soft drinks, including carbonated beverages, are widely consumed worldwide, and the main ingredient in many soft drinks is the caramel color produced from using ammonium compounds,” the study begins.
Consumers of these drinks may be exposed to 4-MEI, a potential carcinogen that is produced during its production.
