Scientists report that the bacteria Vibrio vulnificus is spreading on beaches closer to northern latitudes, and not only in the tropics. These organisms can be deadly for vacationers.
Researchers from Cooper University (USA) have reported on a new threat to beachgoers. Their arguments were published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine. According to scientists, Vibrio vulnificus bacteria can enter the human body by eating seafood, as well as during swimming – through damage to the skin.
“Most often, Vibrio vulnificus does not cause serious health problems, but in some situations it provokes the development of necrotizing fasciitis – an infection that can lead to amputation of a limb or death,” the scientists stated.
Their study showed that the deadly bacteria are actively migrating and moving towards northern regions, which were previously inaccessible to them as unsuitable for reproduction. Now the bacteria can be detected even in water with a temperature of at least 13 degrees Celsius, experts note with alarm. This process, scientists believe, is facilitated by global warming.
Experts have warned: people with weakened immune systems are at increased risk of complications due to infection with the bacteria.
