Bad breath: the doctor explains how to fight it and when it means a deeper problem

Sometimes bad breath can be a sign of problems not in the oral cavity, but inside the body.
Doctor Yael Adler talked about what can cause bad breath, how to deal with it, and when it can mean a deeper problem β for example, a disease that is quietly developing in the body.
Features of nutrition. The doctor notes that you need to be careful with some foods, because “the daily diet strongly affects the smell in the mouth.”
For example, it has been noticed that people who eat very few vegetables are more often faced with the problem of bad breath. Meanwhile, their fiber ensures better breathing and serves as a prevention of halitosis.
It is also important to drink enough – water maintains a healthy condition of the mucous membrane and literally washes away unpleasant odors. In turn, reluctance to drink clean water, unsweetened tea, abuse of sweet drinks, caffeine contributes to the fact that the breath becomes stale.
Smoking. According to the doctor, it significantly worsens the protection in the area of ββthe mucous membrane of the mouth – at the same time, the intensity of blood circulation decreases, the immune function weakens, which allows odor-causing bacteria to multiply with impunity in the mouth.
When does it mean a deeper problem? In some cases, bad breath can be a sign of an internal disease. How can it be determined?
Dr. Adler recommends listening to the air exhaled from the nose. If the problem is deeper than the bacteria in the mouth (for example, it is a violation of the digestive system or a malfunction in metabolism), nasal exhalation also becomes unpleasant for the sense of smell: “if breathing through the nose is also unpleasant, the problem lies deeper.”
In this case, you must consult a doctor.
How to deal with bad breath? The expert gave several recommendations that help maintain fresh breath, if it is spoiled only by unfortunate bacteria, and not stomach diseases.
- Brush your teeth twice a day, each time spending at least two to three minutes on this activity. It is surprising, but a huge number of people ignore this rule.
- Use dental floss, cleaning the space of the gum pockets along the teeth, right and left – the brush often does not reach these areas covered with bacteria.
- Clean the tongue. Many people do not clean their tongue, but the specialist advises to scrape it with a scraper at least ten times in a row.
- Remove tonsil stones. Tonsils located in the throat can be seen if you stand in front of a mirror and stick out your tongue. If you press on them with your finger, sometimes it allows you to remove bad-smelling tonsil stones.
If these tips do not help, you should visit a dentist, the doctor summarized.
