Ukrainians call potatoes differently. Someone calls the potato. But both words have different meanings.
Potatoes are the common name of the crop, while the potato is a separate fruit. In spoken language, both variants are often used, and in some regions you can also hear popular names, such as Barabola.
The origin of the words potato and potato
The word potatoes comes from the German Kartoffel, which, in turn, has Italian Tri-Potafolo. In Ukrainian, this term came in the XIX century and became an official literary option.
The word potato is Slavic origin. It is related to the Polish Bulwa, which means club, as well as Belarusian, where potatoes are the main name of potatoes. In Ukraine, this word is used mainly in the West and in the vernacular. It is this word that is used in official documents, textbooks, scientific works and in culinary literature. The word potatoes are also in dictionaries, but mostly as dialectism or spoken option.
