Beer can have a protective effect against the main processes that lead to Alzheimer's disease – this is the conclusion of the authors of a new study.
Although alcohol is one of the main risk factors for any type of dementia, those people who drink an occasional mug of beer can improve the brain's protection against age degradation. Scientists have discovered a surprising link between beer and a lower risk of Alzheimer's disease.
The reason beer helps prevent Alzheimer's disease comes down to its main ingredient, hops. This component of the drink contributes to the appearance of a specific aroma and taste of beer, but also hops are able to prevent the clumping of protein plaques in the brain associated with the onset of dementia. amyloids, which stick together to form plaques. Accumulating between neurons, such plaques disrupt the function of brain cells, which leads to the development of neurodegenerative pathologies.
The research team studied four common varieties of hops used by brewers. In laboratory conditions, they used hops to affect amyloid proteins and human nerve cells. Under the influence of hops, neurons were cleaned of protein lumps. The researchers added that their results show that hops may be the basis of products capable of reducing the risk of neurodegenerative diseases. As for beer, scientists urged not to abuse it – in large quantities, alcohol accelerates the reduction of the white matter of the brain, which leads to early cognitive problems.
