Bleeding gums and bruising can be signs of liver cirrhosis.

Liver problems can cause complications throughout the body.

Cirrhosis is the most severe stage of fatty liver disease – it usually occurs as a result of years of inflammation of the organ. In this case, the liver becomes scarred, lumpy and shrunken. Over time, the scar tissue replaces more and more healthy tissue in the organ, preventing the liver from working properly. Eventually, it can become so large that the liver stops functioning – a condition called liver failure.

It is very difficult to understand whether cirrhosis exists at the initial stage: it does not always cause obvious symptoms in the early stages. However, as the liver increasingly loses its ability to function properly, certain external signs will begin to appear. According to the NHS (UK health service), the body's signals about cirrhosis of the liver can be bleeding gums and unexplained bruises that appear on the body (very large and dark bruises from minor collisions can also occur).

“Cirrhosis provokes easy bleeding, and one of its possible symptoms is bleeding gums. It also leads to more frequent nosebleeds or bruising,” the experts said.

Other symptoms of liver cirrhosis that doctors advise paying attention to include:

  • Fatigue and weakness.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Weight loss, muscle wasting.
  • Nausea.
  • Discomfort or tenderness in the liver.
  • Red capillaries on the skin above the waist.
  • Every itching.
  • Yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes.
  • Hair loss.
  • Fever, chills.
  • Swelling of the legs, ankles, and feet due to fluid accumulation.
  • Swelling of the abdomen.
