Commenting on the results of this study, the WebMD company noted: “those people who drank at least half a cup of green tea or medium-strength oolong per day for a year had a 46% lower risk of developing hypertension than those who did not. All participants in the study were asked to report their tea drinking habits, which allowed the researchers to calculate how much tea they drank on average each day. The researchers noted that drinking even half a cup of tea a day had a significant positive effect on blood pressure.
The researchers noted: “those who do not have the habit of drinking green tea are at greater risk of developing hypertension than those who do, as we found a gradual reduction in the risk of developing hypertension in those who drink more green tea daily.”
Green tea has a lot of beneficial properties, but most of them are due to the unique substances called catechins contained in its leaves. These antioxidants, found in both green and black tea, can relax the muscles lining blood vessels, which leads to a decrease in blood pressure.
