Can you eat beets every day: benefits and harm

You can eat beets only in the absence of contraindications, and strictly in moderate quantities – no more than 250 grams. This root vegetable has a lot of useful properties, but it can bring more than just benefits to the body.

Talking about the benefits of beets, experts noted its ability to improve the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract. It contains pectin, which suppresses the activity of harmful bacteria, which produces an enveloping effect on the inflamed mucous membrane of the digestive tract. If you eat beetroot every day, it helps to restore its natural microflora.

It is also useful to reduce blood pressure in people with hypertension. The substances of this burgundy vegetable (food nitrates) cause the expansion of blood vessels, thanks to which blood flow improves.

Thanks to the content of strong antioxidants, betaine and betanin, beetroot improves the body's defense against cancer. In addition, it provides us with iron, magnesium, and folic acid, which are necessary for the nervous and circulatory systems.

However, there is also some harm associated with the consumption of beets. It has a high sugar content and a high glycemic index, capable of quickly raising blood sugar levels. With diabetes and prediabetes, it should be eaten with great care.

In addition, beets contain a lot of oxalic acid – this can have a bad effect on the work of the cardiovascular system, and provoke disorders of the gastrointestinal tract.
