There is some concern about whether canned foods, such as canned tomatoes, may increase a person's risk of developing cancer. The charity says:
“No, eating fresh or tinned tomatoes does not affect the risk of cancer. Eating canned tomatoes does not cause cancer. Some cans and jars are coated with something called bisphenol-A (BPA). Stored in BPA-coated cans does not cause cancer.”
Tomatoes also do not prevent cancer.Some studies have looked at whether eating tomatoes can help prevent prostate cancer. These studies focused on a chemical in tomatoes called lycopene.
“But there is no conclusive evidence that lycopene reduces overall cancer risk or prostate cancer risk.”
Although tomatoes may not prevent the development of cancer, the important thing is that they do not necessarily increase the risk of developing this disease. Speaking about whether food can make a big difference, Tom Stansfeld, also from Cancer Research UK, added:
“Diet and cancer prevention is a complex question with few black and white answers; we encourage everyone to eat a balanced diet high in fruit and vegetables and low in red and processed meat, fat and salt.”
