Cancer-causing: Dangerous substances found in popular products

Scientists have found polyfluoroalkyl substances in meat, fish and chocolate, which are linked to kidney cancer, pregnancy complications and high blood cholesterol levels.

The chemicals can get into these foods from the packaging.

Inspectors from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found that the concentration of polyfluoroalkyl substances in half of the tested meat and fish products was twice as high as the recommended values. In chocolate, the norm was exceeded by 250 times.

As is known, polyfluoroalkyls are widely used in household items, for example, they are added to non-stick coatings. They are also part of fire-extinguishing foam, which leads to their accumulation in the environment in places where fires are frequent.
