Cancer: Drinks that can significantly increase the risk of the deadly disease

Cancer is the end result of uncontrolled cell growth that spreads to different parts of the body. To protect yourself from the disease, you need to follow a number of dietary rules, which may include avoiding or reducing your intake of any of these three drinks.

The study examined the consumption of sugary drinks and the risk of cancer. Sugary drinks were defined as drinks containing more than five percent sugar, including fruit juices without added sugar.

The study aimed to assess the association between the consumption of sugary drinks, including sugary drinks and 100 percent fruit juices, artificially sweetened beverages, and the risk of cancer.

The study found that the consumption of sugary drinks was significantly associated with the risk of overall cancer and breast cancer.

“In this large prospective study, consumption of sugary drinks was positively associated with the risk of all cancers and breast cancer,” the study notes. “100 percent fruit juices were also positively associated with the risk of all cancers. These results suggest that sugary drinks, which are widely consumed in Western countries, may represent a modifiable risk factor for cancer prevention.” Another study, which followed more than 35,000 people over a 12-year period, found 3,283 cases of obesity-related cancers, including liver, ovarian, pancreatic and gallbladder cancers. “We were surprised to find that the increased cancer risk was not entirely due to obesity,” said Associate Professor Allison Hodge, from the Cancer Council’s Department of Epidemiology and Intelligence. Even people who were not overweight had an increased risk if they regularly drank soft drinks. This did not happen to those who drank diet soft drinks, suggesting that sugar is the key factor.”
