Scientists concluded , that foods containing resistant starch (usually unripe fruits) can reduce the risk of cancer by 60 percent.
The publication published the results of a new study conducted by employees of the universities of Newcastle and Leeds. According to these data, such an affordable product as bananas can effectively protect against the development of intestinal cancer – provided that they are consumed slightly unripe, green. In general, scientists believe that not only bananas, but also other green starchy fruits have an anti-cancer effect.
“The probability of getting cancer can be reduced by more than half if you choose green products that contain resistant starch – they are able to reduce the risk of some types of cancer by 60 percent,” Cancer Prevention Research scientists quote.
In trials, researchers gave foods containing resistant starch to participants with a high hereditary risk of developing cancer. The subjects received a daily dose of starch equivalent to one unripe banana for about two years. After studying the cases of almost 1,000 patients in this way, experts found that the use of resistant starch is associated with a significant reduction in the risk of developing cancer in various parts of the body. A particularly pronounced anti-cancer effect was observed in the condition of the upper parts of the gastrointestinal tract – at the same time, the probability of cancer of the esophagus, stomach, bile ducts, pancreas and duodenum decreased.
Scientists reminded that resistant starch is also found in oats , cereals, peas, beans – all these are also available products, like bananas. The results of the work are called “exciting”, but it is reported that additional research is needed in this direction. It should be taken into account that the test participants were people with Lynch syndrome, that is, they are prone to cancer due to heredity.
