Can't remember? Several reasons why the memory has become worse
0
In some cases, problems with memory require a visit to a doctor and an examination.
The reasons that can explain the deterioration of memory quality were discussed in an interview by Stephanie S. Faubion, MD (Mayo Clinic ).
Stress or anxiety. When you are stressed, the level of cortisol in the body becomes high. This hormone acts on the body as a stimulant, but it also affects the hippocampus and other parts of the brain responsible for the memory function. Anxiety affects the brain in the same way. Both conditions prevent the body from spending energy on concentration, concentration – attention is disturbed, and memory becomes worse at the same time.
Depression. It is not clear whether depression is the cause of memory loss or a symptom of it, but in any case, research shows an existing link between depression and cognitive impairment, including memory problems.
Proximity to menopause (in women). The fairer sex goes through perimenopause – the period of time that precedes menopause. At this stage of life, women may notice that their memory has become worse: they often cannot remember things that they used to remember easily.
Poor sleep. Whatever the reason for not getting enough sleep, poor sleep has a significant impact on your ability to recall quickly. With a lack of sleep, potentially toxic proteins can accumulate in the brain, which are “washed out” when a person sleeps enough.
Alcohol abuse.Another reason why the work of the central nervous system can slow down, affecting memory. According to the expert, scientists have known for many years that people with disorders arising from alcohol consumption are prone to a decrease in brain size.
Problems with the thyroid gland. Hypothyroidism ( when the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones) contributes to forgetfulness and fog in the head, but can also lead to a decrease in the hippocampus, the area of the brain responsible for memory.
Hyperthyroidism (iron produces too much hormones) can also impair cognitive function, making memory worse.
B12 or folic acid deficiency. Vitamin B12, which supports nerve health, and its abundance for cognitive health is especially important after the age of 50.
When to consult a doctor about poor memory:
- If you increasingly forget everyday routine things.
- If you keep repeating the same story over and over again.
- If your memory has become worse suddenly or after a medical procedure.
- If loved ones notice your forgetfulness more and more often .
