Causes cancer: the threat of a popular food additive has been identified

Scientists from the USA and Sweden have shown that antioxidants, which are considered a preventive measure in the fight against cancer, can provoke the appearance of metastases.
According to the conclusions of Swedish scientist Martin Bergo, vitamin E, which is taken by patients as part of a food supplement, increases the likelihood of lung cancer spreading due to its effect on the BACH1 protein (it was previously believed that taking vitamin E is a good preventive measure).
Experiments on mice and human tissues have revealed the mechanisms that protect cancer cells from the byproducts of their own aggressive growth. The key role is played by the protein BACH1, which is a component of the signaling network associated with the migration of cancer cells and their invasion of healthy tissues.
Researchers have shown that in non-small cell lung cancer, mutations occur that increase the activity of the protein NRF2, which promotes the formation of antioxidants. At the same time, the number of molecules involved in the production of reactive oxygen species and causing oxidative stress decreases. Some of these compounds break down the protein BACH1. However, when the content of antioxidants increases, BACH1 is protected and helps cancer cells spread.
