Children's names in the style of the 1920s are back in fashion: what are the best names for a boy and a girl

Names follow the 100-year rule, meaning names you think are unfashionable now are likely to be popular in the next century.

According to name expert Sophie Kihm of Nameberry, names follow the 100-year rule, meaning names you think are unfashionable now are likely to be popular in the next century.

Names usually go out of style after they've been popular for a while,” says Sophie. “Often it can be measured in generations. Names associated with the parents' generation are usually considered among the least fashionable choices for a baby, such as Brenda and Gary today.

Believe it or not, there will come a day when names like Brenda and Gary will be back in fashion.

We expect that once the name is a thing of the past , it will follow the 100-year rule – names take about 100 years to come back into fashion. This means that names belonging to the generation of great-grandmothers and great-grandfathers are becoming popular again, the expert noted.

Rare Baby Boy Names

Following this theory, names that were common for babies in the 1920s, like Olive, Felix, and Otis, seem interesting again. Sophie says this is because naming trends become popular after the generation they were born with is gone. However, there are exceptions – the classics have always remained relatively evergreen.

Names such as James, Thomas, Henry, George, William and Alexander have never left the top 30 in England and Wales, says the professional.

Traditional – often royal – names tend to hold sway through tradition – especially boy names.

How to Name a Girl Beautifully

Girls' names are historically more decorative , and therefore more susceptible to trends, adds Sophie.

Parents these days want names to be modern, so names like Stephanie, Kieran, Ellen and Tony – which were usually carried by mums, dads, grandparents – are falling out of style, but that means , that they will return even after 100 years.
