Sophie says this is because naming trends become popular after the generation they were born with is gone. However, there are exceptions – the classics have always remained relatively evergreen.

Names such as James, Thomas, Henry, George, William and Alexander have never left the top 30 in England and Wales, says the professional.

Traditional – often royal – names tend to hold sway through tradition – especially boy names.
