Church holiday January 26: prohibitions, signs, and who has an angel's day

January 26 is the 31st Sunday after Pentecost. Today, according to the new calendar, the Orthodox Church commemorates the Venerable Xenophon and Mary. And according to the old calendar, on January 26, the martyrs Yermil and Stratonicus are honored.

History of the church holiday

Little is known about the lives of Xenophon and Maria, who are commemorated on this day. According to legend, the couple lived in Constantinople in the 5th century. The couple were devout Christians, as were their sons, Arkady and John.

To get an education, the boys went to the Phoenician city of Vyryta. However, Arkady and John soon received news of their father's illness, so they returned to Constantinople.

Thanks to the sincere prayers of the family, Xenophon recovered and the boys decided to return to Vyryta by sea. During the journey, a storm arose that wrecked the ship, but Arkady and John were able to escape.

Having reached the shore, the young men continued their studies in local monasteries. Upon learning of the tragedy, Xenophon and Maria thought that the children had died. However, when Maria and Xenophon went to Jerusalem on a pilgrimage, they met their sons in the city thanks to God's Providence.

After such a happy meeting, Arkady and John decided to devote their lives to serving God, becoming hermits. And Maria and Xenophon entered monasteries, having previously distributed their property to the needy.

According to folk signs, in order not to bring bad luck upon yourself, today you cannot:

• open windows – the souls of deceased relatives can enter the house

In addition, it is believed that today it is worth lighting a candle in the temple for the repose of the souls. Otherwise, the dead may disturb living relatives.
