A neurologist explained why cold hands are a reason check the blood pressure readings.
In an interview with a neurologist, the determining cause of cold hands was named vascular spasms. At the same time, the spasm itself can be caused by various factors. One of them is a decrease in blood pressure, which is why cold hands are a reason to check it.
“If for some reason the blood pressure has decreased, the body thinks that it has a serious loss of blood somewhere. A spasm occurs in the blood vessels of the limbs in order to limit the flow of blood in them, to sacrifice them temporarily,” explained the doctor, who had cold hands when blood pressure dropped.
Low blood pressure is not always a problem, but circumstances can present a health hazard , which contribute to such a reduction. In particular, this may be the result of cardiovascular abnormalities (heart failure), thyroid gland disorders (hypothyroidism).
Also, do not forget that a significant decrease in pressure means a slow blood movement – in this case, the brain begins to suffer from untimely supply of oxygen and nutrients. If blood pressure drops to critical levels and does not rise, it is necessary to call an ambulance, as this can lead to a life-threatening condition, up to loss of consciousness and coma.
In addition, vascular spasm, which causes cold hands can be caused by medication or Raynaud's disease, the specialist added.
