Dangerous fakes: shocking data about dietary supplements

In the US, about 75% of Americans take one or more dietary supplements – biologically active additives – every day.

Every third child also takes them. The estimated number of people taking these drugs has increased from 4,000 in 1994 to 50,000-80,000 today. This was reported by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

According to the FDA, supplements can be recalled due to proven or potential harmful effects. The reasons for these differences include:

  • contamination with microbes, pesticides and heavy metals;
  • absence of a dietary ingredient declared in the product;
  • inconsistency of its quantity indicated on the package.

Impurities and unregistered ingredients were also found in the studied dietary supplements, some of which consisted only of neutral fillers (rice, soy, flour).

According to experts from the University of Cambridge, a large part of the dietary supplements available on the market contain dangerous and prohibited substances, as well as those whose properties have not been studied.

Earlier this year, the FDA announced a new control policy plan with the aim of implementing one of the most significant modernizations of the regulation and supervision of food additives in the last 25 years.

Thus, before taking a dietary supplement, make sure that it is safe for you and is fit for purpose.
