Daytime sleep is not useful: the doctor explains why you should not sleep during the day

Daytime naps can contribute to nighttime sleep problems and are generally only beneficial if they are very short, says sleep researcher Hans-Günther Wess (Germany).

Many people like to pamper themselves during the day. sleep, especially on weekends, and even more so in retirement. Somnologist Hans-Günter Wess advises against doing this: in an interview, he explained why daytime sleep is not useful for most people. The expert stated that

A nap lasting more than 30 minutes during the day is useless for adults.

The sleep should not be too long, says the expert. If a person sleeps for more than half an hour, he slips into a phase known as REM sleep, and when he wakes up, he is very lethargic and inhibited. It takes quite a while before her body gets back into shape.

Also, naps during the day don't need more than 30 minutes so as not to interfere with nighttime sleep. An afternoon nap relieves tension, which makes it more difficult to fall asleep in the evening, explains the somnologist.

Hans-Günter Wess emphasized that children and those who do not have any problems with sleep during the day without negative consequences for further work and falling asleep at night can sleep.

“It is better for adults to stay awake during the day. If you allow yourself to take a nap, it should be no longer than 20 minutes and no later than 15 hours”, – this is the expert's opinion.

In turn, it is especially important for people who suffer from insomnia not to sleep during the day.
