Dementia: Early Signs of Cognitive Decline in Women

There are many different types of dementia, the most common of which are Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia. The syndrome can be diagnosed as early as age 45. Although there is no cure for the condition, early diagnosis can help slow its progression or preserve a person's mental function for longer.

According to the Alzheimer's Society, overall, women are more likely to suffer from dementia than men. In fact, there are more women with the disease worldwide than men. Studies show that the rate at which brain cells die is faster in women, according to brain scans.

Another factor behind this statistic could also be that women tend to live longer, but dementia is caused not only by age but also by brain diseases.

Women ignore the following symptoms of dementia:

  • Frequent unnecessary purchases
  • Social isolation
  • Mood swings
  • Speech problems

According to family psychiatrist Jared Hitman, excessive shopping can be a normal procedure for stocking up on various items, including toiletries or cosmetics.

“When going shopping, recent purchases of frequently used items are often forgotten. This can lead to buying items because they are sure they will run out,” he added.

Social isolation is a common sign of cognitive decline, which can be seen in both men and women.

People with ongoing cognitive decline may also lack social awareness, which can lead to inappropriate jokes, for example.

Another sign is difficulty following a conversation or finding the right words. A person with dementia may have trouble expressing themselves verbally.
