“Vascular dementia can also lead to problems with concentration, changes in mood and behavior. These are all possible signs of brain damage that can worsen over time or in sudden spikes every few months or years. Symptoms will depend on which part of the brain is affected, but signs of the condition can include urinary incontinence, mood swings, memory loss and confusion.
Vascular dementia is the second most common type of dementia. It is caused by a decrease in blood supply to the brain due to blood vessel disease. When brain cells don't get the oxygen and nutrients they need, they die, leading to brain damage and symptoms of dementia.
People who have had a stroke, heart disease, or diabetes are at a higher risk of developing vascular dementia. All three of these conditions affect blood vessel health.
