A new study from Hiroshima University shows that a common gum infection called periodontitis may be linked to atrial fibrillation, or irregular heartbeat.
As the scientists explained, periodontitis is associated with prolonged inflammation, and inflammation plays a key role in the pathogenesis of atrial fibrillation. For their work, the team removed parts of the heart with scars and analyzed the tissue. It turned out that the more severe the gum infection, the more pronounced the scarring.
Scientists believe that proper gum care can reduce the risk of developing a dangerous condition. Therefore, it is important to thoroughly clean the oral cavity, including with dental floss.
