Diet for arthritis: named foods that reduce symptoms of inflammation

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic disease that causes pain, swelling and stiffness of the joints. Scientists at Stanford University have found that fermented foods such as yogurt help increase the number of beneficial gut bacteria and appear to help prevent inflammation, a major cause of arthritis.

The study found that after regular consumption yogurt, the test subjects had decreased levels of 19 proteins, which are markers of inflammation.

“One of these proteins, interleukin 6, is associated with chronic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and type 2 diabetes,” the publication writes . Scientists have concluded that changes in nutrition can affect the gut microbiome.

Fermented foods are foods obtained as a result of controlled microbial growth and transformation under the influence of enzymes that increase the rate of chemical processes and change the composition of the product. In addition to yogurt, these include kefir, sauerkraut, cheese, natural soy sauce and some other products.

“We wanted to conduct an experimental study that could test whether food targeting the microbiota could become a means of combating with a sharp increase in chronic inflammatory diseases,” said Dr. Christopher Gardner.
